Knot motifs are universal, spanning the globe in all cultures. Traditional knots tie things together. In design, knots are a symbol of unity and the interconnectedness of all things. The Kiefer Knot is a variation of the Celtic knots, which are a form of sacred geometry representing the eternal web and the continuous cycling of existence.
“Tying the knot” is an old cliché that is appropriate to the Kiefer Bridal business. The saying remains from centuries ago when a rope and cord were used as the first form of legal contracts. A witness would tie a knot if they could not write. The knot tied to a strap was attached to the contract. In weddings, the couple’s wrists were tied to symbolize their unity.
The Kiefer Knot was commissioned by Kiefer’s Owners David & Wendy Hevia in 2006. Similar to tying the bow on a gift package, the knot concept was explained to designer Netta Radice. Aspects such as the forming and orientation of the knot were finalized and introduced in the new Kiefer Logo at the opening of its store in Land O’ Lakes, Florida.
Each loop of the Kiefer Knot signifies unity to a particular cause or virtue. The two causes are Customer and Community. Kiefer’s values its customers to serve them in an overreaching fashion. Kiefer’s also seeks to serve the community by supporting those that align with local benevolence, especially in regard to children’s needs. The two virtues are Commitment and Confidence. Kiefer’s is committed to its causes and considers earning their confidence in doing so as the highest achievement.
Building relationships and tying the knots of friendship is Kiefer’s driving mission but the Kiefer Knot symbol can signify many things. It’s an invitation to put one’s own meaning on it and have it symbolize whatever is most important to you. For a young couple getting married, this could be love, loyalty, friendship, and service. The main symbol is unity and that’s the message Kiefer’s intended it to represent – Unity with their Customers, Associates, Community, and Suppliers.
